Green School
Green School
Caroline Haslett School is built in a very special part of Milton Keynes.
Shenley Lodge was designated an energy conservation development when it was first planned in the early 1980’s. The first houses were all built to a very high energy-saving specification. For example houses had triple glazing, solar gain arrangements for heating, very high levels of insulation and one house was specially designed to be mostly under the ground!
Our school was also built with energy conservation in mind - it has a smaller wall area in relation to the number of classrooms than many schools, the windows are double glazed and small to conserve heat and the large roof area is well insulated.
Energy saving light bulbs are installed throughout and we are just about to install a rain water recycling system to flush the loos!
In 2002 we had a new four-classroom block built to extend our accommodation. All the materials used in it’s construction are either capable of being recycled or are bio-degradable. The toilets in this block already use rain water. The under floor heating system is very efficient and the energy saving lights are fitted with sensors which turn the lights off if no movement is detected in the room for 5 minutes (very spooky when you are sitting quietly at your desk when all the children have gone home!)
Plans have been drawn up for a specialist-teaching block, which will begin construction in January 2007. These plans incorporate design features such as light wells and wind turbine technology so that our children can get involved in monitoring the impact of energy saving measures on our school environment
School recycling
Year 6 children operate a rota to collect all the card and paper put aside for recycling throughout the school. These materials are collected from school, fortnightly, by MK Council. We collect printer ink and toner cartridges for recycling, spectacles for shipment and subsequent re-use in Africa, the Salvation Army collect unwanted clothes etc fortnightly from two special bins.

A group of Governors have been working on our travel plan, approved in 2006 and now beginning to be implemented. The children on the Healthy Schools Committee have been involved in the development of the ideas.
